Understanding DMI

What is DMI therapy?

Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) is a structured, hands-on therapy used to improve gross motor skills in children with motor delays and neurological or genetic conditions. The therapist guides the child through specific exercises, with precise handling and carefully graded support, so that the child learns to produce the movement actively.

DMI is built on neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to form and strengthen movement pathways through repeated, meaningful practice. As the child gets stronger, support is reduced step by step, so the child does more of the work.

Therapist-guided handlingExact hand placement and positions for each exercise.
Against gravity, with supportDynamic positions that build posture and upright control.
Repetition with progressionPractice that gets gradually harder as your child gains skill.
Brain and body learning togetherMovement that supports balance, muscle control and coordination.

DMI is used for children with motor delay across a range of diagnoses. Whether it is the right fit is decided after assessment.

Cerebral palsyTight or stiff muscles, posture and movement control challenges.
HypotoniaFloppy body, poor trunk strength and tiring quickly.
Global developmental delayMotor milestones arriving later than expected for age.
Genetic and chromosomal conditionsChildren with syndromes that affect movement and strength.
Premature birthBabies and toddlers who are catching up on motor skills.
Delayed walkingNot standing or walking at the expected age.
Brain or spinal injuryChildren rebuilding movement after injury or neurological illness.

DMI vs traditional therapy

How DMI is different

DMI can sit alongside other therapies. Here is what sets its approach apart.

Focus
DMI at PediGym
General pediatric therapy
Approach
Structured exercises with precise, hands-on handling
Often broader, play-based activity
Child’s role
Active effort, with support reduced as strength grows
Varies with the activity and the child
Stretching
Dynamic stretching during movement
Often passive stretching
Posture
Builds upright control against gravity step by step
Depends on the therapy plan
Parents
Home program and clear guidance on safe practice
Varies by centre

DMI is one approach and may be combined with speech, feeding and other therapies when your child needs them.

Signs to look for

When to see a DMI therapist in Faridabad

Every child develops at their own pace. If these signs continue, an assessment can help.

Body and posture

  • Floppy or very stiff body
  • Poor head or trunk control
  • Tires quickly or avoids movement

Milestones

  • Not rolling, sitting or crawling when expected
  • Not standing or walking by around 18 months
  • Needs a lot of support to stand or walk

Walking and balance

  • Frequent falls or unsteady walking
  • Toe walking or an unusual walking pattern
  • Weakness on one side of the body

See a doctor first if your child loses skills they already had, has sudden weakness, seizures, or breathing or feeding trouble.

Progress continues at home

Therapy works best when practice does not stop at the clinic door.

Parent guidance

You are part of the plan. We show you what to do, why it helps and how to keep your child safe.

  • Simple, clear demonstrations
  • Exercises that fit your daily routine
  • Regular progress updates

Starting early

The early years are a key window for learning movement. If you have a concern, do not wait for a diagnosis to ask.

  • Assessment before therapy begins
  • Goals matched to your child’s stage
  • Plan reviewed as your child grows

What is DMI therapy?

Dynamic Movement Intervention is a hands-on motor therapy. The therapist guides your child through specific exercises with graded support, helping them build strength, posture, balance and movement skills.

Which children can benefit from DMI?

DMI is used for children with motor delay, including those with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, low muscle tone, global developmental delay and genetic conditions. After an assessment, we tell you if it suits your child.

At what age can DMI start?

It can begin in infancy and continue through childhood. Starting early is helpful, but there is no need to wait for a formal diagnosis to book an assessment.

Is DMI painful or tiring for my child?

Exercises are challenging but guided carefully and paced to your child’s comfort. Your child may tire or fuss at times, and the therapist adjusts the session accordingly.

How is DMI different from regular physiotherapy?

DMI is more structured and specific, with precise handling, dynamic stretching and a clear progression for each exercise. It can be combined with other therapies.

How many sessions will my child need?

It depends on your child’s age, condition and goals. We discuss session frequency after assessment and review progress regularly. We do not promise fixed timelines, because every child is different.

Do parents have to practise at home?

Home practice helps a lot. We teach you simple, safe exercises so that progress continues between sessions.
