Understanding the therapy

What is oro-motor and feeding therapy?

Oro-motor therapy builds the strength and control of the lips, cheeks, jaw and tongue, the muscles we use to drink, chew, swallow and form speech sounds. Feeding therapy adds gentle, play-based support for tastes, textures and mealtime routines, so eating feels safer and more enjoyable.

Low muscle toneDevelopmental delaysCerebral palsySensory feeding issues
Mouth skills at a glance

Four parts, one smooth mealtime

Lips

Close the mouth to drink and keep food in

Tongue

Moves food around and starts the swallow

Jaw

Bites and chews with steady control

Cheeks

Hold food in place while chewing

The same muscles also shape clear speech sounds.
Signs to look for

Signs your child may need support

Every child eats at their own pace. These signs, if they continue, are worth discussing with a therapist.

Difficulty sucking, drinking or using a cup or straw
Drooling a lot beyond the expected age
Gags, coughs or chokes on certain foods
Accepts only a few foods or textures
Prefers purees or soft food, and avoids chewing
Holds food in the cheeks or keeps it in the mouth
Mealtimes are long, messy or stressful
Open mouth at rest, or tongue pushing out

When to see a doctor first: if your child chokes often, coughs or turns blue while eating, has repeated chest infections, or is losing weight or not gaining weight, please consult your pediatrician promptly.

Call PediGym
What is oro-motor therapy?

It is a set of play-based activities that build the strength, coordination and control of the lips, cheeks, jaw and tongue. These skills support sucking, drinking, chewing, swallowing and speech sounds.

Is my child just a picky eater, or do they need therapy?

Many children go through fussy phases. If your child accepts only a few foods, gags often, avoids chewing, or mealtimes are consistently stressful, an assessment can show whether extra support would help.

Does feeding therapy force my child to eat?

No. Sessions are gentle and child-led. Food and textures are introduced gradually through play, so your child feels safe and in control.

How long does therapy take?

It varies, because every child’s needs and progress differ. We discuss a plan after the assessment and review progress regularly.

What can parents do at home?

Keep mealtimes calm and regular, seat your child well supported, offer new foods without pressure, and practise the activities your therapist suggests. If your child chokes often or is not gaining weight, speak to your pediatrician.

Worried about your child’s eating?

Every child’s feeding journey is different. Book an assessment at PediGym Gurugram and our team will help you understand the next steps.
